20-4 Eldership on the Mat

Bridge 4 Cowrie Shell Divination into full Merindilogun by honoring Eldership: Eldest, Elder, Senior and Junior cowries and their corresponding Odu.0

This module deepens your discipline with 16-day casting practice so that the relationship between cowrie position, orientation and Odu seniority becomes instinctive in your hands.

16 cowries • 8 face up • 8 face down • live orientation on the mat

Module 2 Overview — Eldership

A solid foundation for Merindilogun is built on the 4 Cowrie Shell Divination System. From five basic families of responses it can be expanded to reveal the 256 Odu; extending these principles into Merindilogun is known, in this course, as 20-4. The guiding principle is Respecting Eldership.1

The 20-4 Eldership Pattern

In this module you are not just memorizing Odu. You are learning how location, orientation and seniority of the shells reveal which Odu is “speaking first,” training your eye and spirit to recognize Eldest, Elder, Senior and Junior expressions in every cast.

Module Intent

By the end of 16 days of practice you will have documented a living map of how your casting elements express Odu through Eldership, giving you a repeatable 20-4 pattern that you can carry into full Merindilogun work and certification.

Daily Practice — 16 Days of 20-4

Each practice day is built from four focused casts. Every cast yields a sequence of Eldest, Elder, Senior and Junior Odu, documented using two columns of dots (single or double) according to your casting orientation.2

Core Instructions (Per Day)

  1. Cast once and determine the Eldest cowries (closest to you), then Elder, Senior and Junior. From this single cast, document four pairs of Odu using dots based on orientation and direction.
  2. Cast a second time and repeat, recording the next four Odu pairs for Eldest, Elder, Senior and Junior.
  3. Cast a third and a fourth time, each time documenting four more Odu pairs determined by Eldership.
  4. At the end of Day 1 you will have 16 pairs of Odu (4 casts × 4 Eldership positions). Repeat this structure for each of the 16 consecutive days.

If more than one full day of practice is missed, start the 16-day count again. Consistency is part of the initiation into Eldership on the mat.3
